One Coburg Quarter is a gateway building, both literally as it allows access through the 19th century wall, and figuratively as it heralds the beginning of a new era for a new northern village.

Announcing entry into Coburg Quarter from the wider precinct defined by Sydney Road and Bell Street, One Coburg Quarter sits proudly above the historic bluestone walls with a strong yet respectful presence.

Seen in the round the building presents at the civic scale as a singular and sculptural form, its curved and modulated façades establishing a sophisticated dialogue with the robust and linear nature of the older heritage fabric.

Inspired by its context, the strong horizontal manifestation of the bluestone and mortar courses is reflected in the articulation and expression of the new façades. The primary expression of One Coburg Quarter is of a composition of larger horizontal elements, orchestrated in a way which alludes to the stack bonding of the bluestone walls. At a finer level the articulation and detail of the façades reinforces the horizontal stratification of the existing context.

Arrival and entry into One Coburg Quarter is a special experience. Subtle and beautifully crafted interventions are stitched into the existing heritage walls, bringing clear legibility
to the distinction between new and old and hinting that something lies beyond. Passing through a landscaped courtyard, entry into the building is via a living lobby which will be a space synonymous with a luxury hotel.

Above the apartments a resident’s roof top garden has been designed to be a place to meet fellow residents and to share the stunning views back over Coburg to the city skyline.
